How To Take Care Of Your Contact Lenses

Jan 4, 2023 | Blog

Contact lenses are a convenient, comfortable way to improve your vision. But because they sit directly on your eyes, taking care of them properly is essential to avoid an infection. Caring for your contact lenses will extend their life while protecting your eyes and vision. You’ll find it’s rather easy to care for them. Here, we’ve put together some tips to help you take care of your contact lenses.

4 Contact Lenses Care Tips

Keep Your Contact Lenses Clean

It’s important to keep your lenses clean to avoid the buildup of bacteria and dirt. Regularly cleaning your contact lenses will reduce the risk of irritation and infection. Wash your hands with soap and water before handling your contact lenses. Follow the instructions provided by your eye doctor for cleaning, disinfecting, rinsing, and storing them—this may involve using a mild solution or rubbing each lens with your fingers.

Properly Store Them

Make sure you store your contacts in a proper case when not wearing them—and replace that case every three months or so. Fill the case with fresh solution and soak the lenses in it overnight. Remember to empty any remaining solution from the case after each use before refilling it. Don’t top up with a fresh solution, as this can introduce bacteria.

Don’t Over-Wear Them

Your eyes need to rest from contact lenses. Most people should not wear them for more than 12 consecutive hours. If you find your eyes blurry or tired before that, take the contacts out and give the eyes a break. Make sure to replace the old lenses with new ones at least every two weeks, even if they don’t show any signs of damage.

Replace Them Periodically

Over time, contact lenses will accumulate dirt and protein deposits, which can impair vision and cause discomfort and infection. Even if you’re careful about cleaning them regularly, replacing your contacts at least every six months is important. Some lenses may need replacing as often as every two weeks. Check with your optometrist for the appropriate replacement frequency for your lenses.

By following these tips, you can keep your contact lenses in great condition and extend their life, so you can enjoy clear vision without irritation or infection. With proper care and regular replacements, contact lenses are a fantastic alternative to glasses!
