Glaucoma: How To Prevent Vision Loss

Aug 31, 2023 | Blog

Glaucoma is among the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide. This condition typically creeps up unnoticed, gradually stealing your vision without showing symptoms until it’s too late. As we shed light on this vision-threatening disease, we aim to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining good eye health  to prevent permanent vision loss.

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases characterized by damage to the optic nerve, the cable-like structure responsible for transmitting visual information from your eyes to your brain. This damage usually occurs due to high intraocular pressure (IOP), the pressure inside your eyes. However, it’s worth noting that glaucoma can still occur even with normal IOP levels.

There are several types of glaucoma, but the most common ones are open-angle glaucoma and angle-closure glaucoma. Open-angle glaucoma progresses slowly and is often symptomless until significant vision loss has occurred. On the other hand, angle-closure glaucoma can develop suddenly and is usually accompanied by severe eye pain, blurred vision, and nausea.

Glaucoma: The Silent Thief Of Sight

The nickname “silent thief of sight” stems from the insidious nature of glaucoma. It silently causes damage to the optic nerve, often without any noticeable symptoms in the early stages. This makes it particularly dangerous as the disease may have already advanced significantly by the time you notice changes in your vision, leading to irreversible vision loss.

Unlike some other eye conditions where symptoms such as blurry vision or eye discomfort prompt you to seek medical attention, glaucoma symptoms can be very subtle. For instance, open-angle glaucoma, the most common type, initially affects peripheral vision (side vision). This is less noticeable as our brains are good at compensating for minor vision loss.

The Importance Of Regular Eye Examinations

Because glaucoma often presents no early symptoms, regular comprehensive eye examinations are crucial for its detection. Early detection and treatment are key to stopping significant vision loss from glaucoma. If detected early, treatment options such as eye drops, lasers, or surgery can slow down or prevent further vision loss.

However, it’s important to note that any vision loss from glaucoma cannot be restored – hence the need for early detection and treatment. If you’re over 40, have a family history of glaucoma, or have certain medical conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure, you’re at a higher risk of developing glaucoma.
