Eye Emergencies 101

First, let’s discuss common eye injuries and emergencies that can happen:

Chemical Exposure

If chemicals come into contact with the eye, quick action is crucial. Rinse the eye immediately with plenty of water or saline solution for at least 15 minutes. Keep the eye open as much as possible during rinsing. Don’t try to neutralize the chemical with other substances; don’t rub your eye, as this can cause further damage. After rinsing, seek emergency eye care immediately.

Foreign Objects

For small particles like dust or sand, encourage blinking to try to remove the object naturally. If blinking doesn’t work, gently flush the eye with water. However, if an object is embedded in the eye, do not attempt to remove it yourself. Cover your eye with a clean cloth or a paper cup to protect it, and head straight to an optometrist.

Blows To The Eye

If the eye suffers an impact from a sharp object, apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and pain. Do not apply pressure directly to the eye. A bag of ice wrapped in cloth works well, but ensure not to use raw meat or other perishable items as a compress, as they can introduce bacteria. If your vision is blurry or the pain persists, it’s time to see an optometrist.
